Kvanefjeld is the sixth uranium deposit in the world, but it is also the richest site in rare earths in the entire globe. Rare earths (neodymium in particular) which are fundamental for the global energy transition and are also used in digital technologies, electric cars and wind turbines. The island is also rich in oil, lead, gold, and zinc.
The previous government aimed precisely at starting the exploitation of the mineral resources of Kvanefjeld to replenish the budget of the island and be able to afford independence from Denmark. The future of Greenland, according to the outgoing executive, should have focused on the huge deposits of precious minerals.
The previous government, which had started the process to assign the exploitation licenses attracting the interest of Greenland Minerals (a company based in Australia but owned by China) went into crisis precisely on the question of the exploitation of these resources. The coalition split, forcing the relative majority Siumut party to lead everyone to an early vote.
The election campaign in Greenland has put the 50,000 inhabitants of the island, which depends on Denmark, in front of an ultimatum. As presented by the left-wing party led by Egede, the choice was between health and independence from Copenhagen. And health won.
